Dietary Prevention of Uric Acid Kidney Stones
We at Endocrinology Consultants PLLC understand how serious uric acid stones are. These are one of the four major types of kidney stones and consist of hard masses of minerals in crystalized form in the kidneys. Statistics show that one in 10 Americans will have a kidney stone of some sort in their lives.
This disease can be prevented, so let Endocrinology Consultants PLLC show you how it's done.
Fluid
The key to prevention is your fluid intake. This will dilute the urine, and you need eight cups of water per day (1 cup = 8 oz). How can you increase your fluid intake?
- Drink a glass of water before you brush your teeth in the morning.
- If you take medication in the morning, take it with a glass of water.
- Always pour a glass of water with each meal.
- Eat fruits, jello, puddings, low-fat ice cream to increase your fluid intake.
- Drink a glass of water as soon as you get home at night. This should not cause you to get out of bed to go to the bathroom.
- Sip water throughout the day. Purchase bottled water to encourage increased fluid intake. Bring a thermos to work.
Protein
Limit protein intake to 3 oz daily (3 oz = size of deck of cards). This includes ALL MEATS:
- Fish
- Chicken
- Turkey
- Pork
- Deer
- All red meat
Purines
Purines are changed to uric acid in your body. Avoid or limit (less than 1-2 times/month) high purine foods:
- Anchovies
- Brains
- Kidneys
- Game meats
- Thick gravies
- Herring
- Liver
- Sardines
- Scallops
- Sweetbread
